Families grow and for Merason the opportunity to add a DAC to the range as a sibling to the DAC-1 was one not to be missed. An ideal unit for those who are seeking a DAC at a different price point or perhaps for a second system; crucially however – performance has to be commensurate. Merason offers the Frérot to do precisely that.
Like most siblings there are qualities inherited and in the case of the Frérot the same analogue like sound is apparent from first use. Build is consistent to the larger unit, with a 3 mm thick, powder coated aluminium chassis and case and a similar range of inputs.
The Burr-Brown PCM1794-A converter chip appears again, however in single form performing decoding for both channels. Output amplifiers are built using Class A topology and are discrete.
The Frérot may be the little brother, but you can be sure it’s no cheeky upstart.
The new POW1 is a Linear, Regulated Power Supply designed exclusively for the Merason Frérot DAC.
It generates -12V and+12V, both regulated in 2 ways, the second regulation being particularly low-noise and discrete. The employed rectifier diodes built into the POW1 are special types, which, in contrast to usual rectifier diodes, do not produce any spikes and therefore no interference in the supply. The reference voltage for the regulation of the +/- 12V supply is generated by a precise IC instead of using the usual Zener diodes.
This gives the advantage of a supply that is exactly matched to the needs of the Frérot: By using the POW1, the output stage of the Frérot is powered directly by the POW1. In addition, the POW1 is robustly constructed with a toroidal transformer manufactured according to Merason’s specifications, incorporates a metal housing with a shielding cover and is Swiss made
